Patterns submissions! Ups and downs!

   Welcome to my blog! thanks for visiting me

I have started to submit to brands in order to license my work. I have developed a new portfolio for a year, as I have always sold my patterns outright to Spanish companies. It is not usual to license them in my country, only the most famous designers do it.

Although I have been contacted by some of them surprisingly through my facebook page, it is usually me who tries to contact them sending them a short email but adding the links to my already licensed work, pod sites and my blog, in order they can trust on my work easier. They receive so many submissions that it is good to show them I am not an amateur or an unexperienced designer.

I haven´t written to any fabric or stationery manufacturers yet, which usually have a submission brief. I have only written to some home products, bags, totes and iphone cases manufacturers!

Lately, I have received some refusal emails, which made me feel a little disappointed, but now I have realized my style can´t not fit well on their products or they have too many designers, therefore they have very high standards. These are some of the comments I have received,

“Your work looks good, but at the moment we're not looking for that artwork style. I'll get back in..."
“Our licensing team reviewed your gallery and unfortunately at this time we are not able to fit you... We will certainly keep your contact information on file for future reference”

Others ones don´t close the door to you, but you wonder if it is a way of a polite rejection! "I love your designs! I'll forward your details on to our head designer…”
And of course, some of my submissions  haven´t received any reply at all!

But of course, I feel really happy when I receive a nice email telling me I have been accepted it sending  me some nice comments, not sure if they are always  the similar words for the approved ones, such as;

I’ve had a good look at your portfolio and … - your designs are beautiful!  We would definitely love to work with you.” “I saw your profile at Society6 and it´s looks stunning, it´s something that could perfectly fit with..” “I've checked your works on some websites and have an interest in them…” "Your work is very interesting" and...

So it is funny how being the same artist, some brands  like my work and others don´t. I suppose only the most talented, versatile and unique designers are accepted everywhere!Sure, they also have ever been rejected!

I didn´t have experience about submissions at all, but now I have learnt I must be strong enough to receive refusals emails and try they not to affect me as the first one did!

The truth is that I am really proud about how things are going to me, and I shoudn´t complain about it knowing all the competiveness existing and the big amount of talented  artists doing the same as me; sending submissions trying to license their work! I wish you lots of luck in your applications, it is like an obstacle race.

    thanks for your post today. Was great reading it.
    Only one thing, you are an amazing artist and so many different companies outside there, in some your work will fit better than others, do not take it personally, is just the way it is.
    And CONGRATULATIONS for your 2nd place in the Spoonflower contest, I hope it bring you more luck in the future :-) all the best x
